My name is Laurie McIntosh, and I am the owner, founder and head trainer at K9 Knose-it. Welcome to the K9 Knose-it blog!
At K9 Knose-it, we offer a variety of dog training services – from board and train options for pet dog owners, to specialized services such as bed bug detection, explosives detection dogs and security patrol services. We also breed and raise working line puppies for use in police and military environments.
In the coming months, we will be using our blog to provide you with valuable information to enhance your knowledge of the world of dog training. However, in this article, I want to let you know a little about me, my background in dog training, and how K9 Knose-it seeks to help improve the world through our dog training services.
My background in dog training
Dogs have always been a major part of my life, and I have been breeding and training dogs professionally for three decades.
Back in the 1990s, I bred German Shepherds which were sold and used by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Some of these dogs even went on to compete in agility trials in the following years. I got involved in French Ring in the early 2000s, and this really sparked my interest in working breeds. I had been working with German Shepherds exclusively to this point, but with my passion for working breeds truly ignited, I actually acquired a Belgian Malinois shortly afterwards (and I would go on to have many more in the years to follow!).
I first competed in French Ring competition in 2007. Since that point, I have competed over 70 times with five different dogs in countries across the globe, achieving the highest level possible in French Ring – Ring 3.
In 2019, I attended Highland Canine’s School for Dog Trainers division in in Harmony, NC. Although I already had some experience training dogs, I wanted to attend the School for Dog Trainers to expand my knowledge. Originally, I was only going to attend the shorter, 18-week program – but ended up switching and participating in their 24-week Master Dog Trainer program. This was an incredible experience which allowed me to further expand the services we can offer at K9 Knose-it.

About K9 Knose-it
Dogs are absolutely incredible. If you have spent any time around dogs – whether you have kept them as pets, or used them for working purposes – you’ll know there is almost no end to their capabilities.
One of the most amazing things about dogs is the power of their nose. Their olfactory systems are so powerful (particularly compared to humans) and this makes them prime candidates for detection work. I have seen first-hand just how effective dogs can be when it comes to locating odour, which can be utilized for a number of purposes.
At K9 Knose-it, we’ve been harnessing that powerful nose for several years to help with bed bug detection. Whether it is commercial premises such as hotels, motels or Airbnbs, college residences, senior homes, or even private households, we have worked to help identify bed bug infestations efficiently and quickly. With such a reliable method and process in place, we are the perfect partner to give peace of mind to businesses and individuals alike.
We also provide additional dog training services here at K9 Knose-it. We are able to provide explosive detection dog services for large events, ensuring the safety and security of those in attendance. Our security patrol services can help businesses to ensure their premises remain protected against intruders. For pet dog owners in Calgary, we also provide Board & Train services to help rectify any behavioural issues you might be experiencing.
Ready to take your dog’s training to the next level?
About our Board & Train programs
I wanted the Board & Train programs we offer at K9 Knose-it to be a little different from the standard programs you typically get at a boarding facility. I’ve seen the common pitfalls associated with large training facilities – there is actually very little hands-on time for the dog with the trainer, and the amount of time they spend in a kennel can present problems when the dog returns home.
When you sign your dog up for our Board & Train programs at K9 Knose-it, they become a member of our family – almost literally.
We only work with one or two dogs at any given time. This opens up the potential for lots of new training opportunities. Rather than spending the majority of their time in a kennel (as is frequently the case at other boarding facilities), your dog will have the chance to live a ‘normal’ life during their time with us. They’ll go on lots of walks, enjoy the experience of socialisation opportunities around Calgary, and interact with the existing members of our pack.
We work with all dogs, no matter the size, age or breed of your dog, and irrespective of how difficult your training goals might be. There is no such thing as an untrainable dog, and you should disregard anyone who gives you this advice! We will work with you to achieve your dog training goals.
